Our theme sculpture was given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Rev. Robert Floy, a former pastor of St. John,  given by Dr. and Mrs. Irene (Floy) McKenney and family. It was created by Lynn Dobson, Dobson Organ Company of Lake City, Iowa in November and December 1991. Dobson used organ parts to create this sculpture.

Depicting the theme, “I AM Living Water, come to me and drink,” and “I AM the Light of the World,” the three panels tell the story of God’s activity in our history. The left panel is the Old Testament Panel. The tree of life with its fruit evokes God’s creative activity. Notice that creation does not end, the fruit of God’s blessings proceeds throughout history into the other two panels. To the left of Christ are 12 stars, representative of the twelve tribes of Israel. Note that two of the stars are in the center panel, evoking the tragic split of the ten tribes in the northern kingdom of Israel and the two tribes in the southern kingdom of Judah. In the lower left-hand corner of the Old Testament panel is the “old” Jerusalem.

The center of all history is Jesus Christ. The middle panel shows an authoritative and gracious head of Christ, with radiant beams of light above and horizontal flowing lines of water below. The face of Christ is modeled from the earliest stained-glass image of Christ to have survived intact: the 11th century window of the Abbey Church of Wissembourg, Alsace, France.

The light of Christ radiates into the Old Testament panel, witnessing to our faith that he is the Messiah of Israel long foretold by the prophets and into the New Testament panel where he continues to enlighten all peoples and nations. The light illumines a rainbow, reminiscent of the promises of God to Noah and all the peoples of the earth. The living water flows from the head of Christ over the heads of two persons, male and female, reminding us that in God’s gracious choice we are made saints by the baptism of Jesus Christ.

Also springing from the water of Holy Baptism is the New Jerusalem, the City of God. There are also twelve stars to the right of Christ, representing the twelve disciples. St. John is given prominence, depicted in the ancient symbol for John, the eagle. Certainly, this symbol represents all the people of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. We are called, like the disciples, to witness to the Living Water and the Light of Christ.
